Bodega Bay, California - June, 2018
photos taken: ~1450
I spent a few days exploring the Sonoma County coast in northern California. The howling humid wind was ridiculously cold for much of the visit, allowing me to use winter gear that would otherwise be used for exploring high-altitude locations or late-fall destinations.
The first day was spent visiting Point Reyes National Seashore. I checked out the somewhat-famous cypress tree tunnel and hiked out to Abbotts Lagoon, where there were plenty of birds to be seen. Of particular interest were all the birds that had been banded, which I later found out was likely due to research done at the nearby Palomarin Field Station, one of the leading locations for studying birds and their behaviors/habitats.
I then took a few days driving up the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping at some of the state beaches along the way.
As the weekend arrived, so did the crowds of people. Being mid-June, this was quite the popular destination, especially given its proximity to San Francisco. The town of Bodega Bay had stop-and-go traffic for several miles on Saturday, and I wasn't aware of any special events going on. After seeing this, I imagine that avoiding summer weekends would give the best visiting experience in the area.
Overall, the scenery of this part of the coastline is rugged and amazing. I definitely plan to return and explore the area more!
